I know very little about Military Parents in Support of Withdrawal Now, but I think the group was founded after a father tried to kill himself and the officers delivering the news of his son's death. The man's name is Larry Maxwell.

—Tom

Tory clicked over to the Internet and did a Google search on Larry Maxwell. She came up with a few hits of the same story. She remembered the incident as soon as she read the AP article.

Tory didn't know if talking to Maxwell would reveal anything further or not. She continued reading articles on the Internet and found one that gave her the link she'd been looking for. Janice's ex-husband and Larry had served together in the Marines. Larry had retired after only two tours, but Rodney Petri had stayed on.

There was a picture of a Veteran's Day celebration from three years ago, a Main Street parade that showed Janice and Rodney Petri along with Larry Maxwell and his wife, Alice.

She searched for Freedom Now and found a Web site with a message to the U.S. President and the Joint Chiefs. They had two pictures of the hostages. The newest one showed Cobie's hand, one fingertip missing. Sick. Tory forwarded the link to Jay Matthews for input Jay knew the landscape in Berzhaan better than she did. Maybe he could pinpoint where they were based on the tape.

She searched through Lexis/Nexis and an Internet phone book until she found a contact number for Larry. She dialed the number.

"I'm not here, leave a message." The voice was gruff and not exactly inviting.

Tory put on her best upbeat voice. "Hi, Mr. Maxwell, this is Tory Patton with UBC television. I'm interested in talking to you about a story I'm working on."

Tory went through the list of other major players in Military Parents in Support of Withdrawal Now and left messages for Bebe Pennybaker and Melanie Wilkins. Those two women, along with Janice Petri, were the ones who ran the organization and took care of the daily details.

Tory investigated parents who'd lost children in the military and lined up interviews with those who supported the U.S. military action in the Middle East and Berzhaan.

These stories gave her a legitimate reason to poke around the Pentagon and see what she could uncover about the hostages.
